Kapruka from School – 25th School Based Series of Program

Location – A/Moroththegama Junior School, Dewahuwa

Moroththegama Junior School, nestled in the heart of the Anuradhapura district within the North Central Province, has emerged as a shining example of rural educational excellence. Operating within the Andiyagala education zone as a provincial-level institution, it serves students from Grade 1 to Grade 5, focusing on holistic development alongside academic achievements. Government support is crucial for such schools, especially considering the financial constraints faced by many students.

Recently, the school embarked on its 25th environmental initiative, aptly titled “Kapruka From School,” in collaboration with the Green Hands Initiative (GHI). This initiative, spearheaded by the dedicated leadership of Principal Mr. Kamal Marasinha, aimed to instill environmental awareness and promote sustainable agricultural practices among its students, parents, and the broader community. Despite facing challenges such as scorching temperatures typical of the North Central Province, the program kicked off on a bright note on February 28th, 2024, with enthusiastic participation from approximately 160 individuals, including students, parents, villagers, and esteemed guests.

Distinguished speakers, including Project officers, GN Officer (Dewahuwa), former Principal, and current Principal graced the occasion with their insights into pressing agricultural challenges, with a special emphasis on coconut cultivation strategies. Through engaging lectures, interactive sessions, and informative presentations, participants gained valuable knowledge on sustainable agricultural practices tailored to the local context. The program seamlessly transitioned into hands-on activities meticulously planned in collaboration with the project team.

Despite the sweltering heat, Principal Mr. Kamal and committed parents rose to the occasion, laboring tirelessly to dig coconut pits, a task essential for planting coconut seedlings. Each pit, assigned to two students, symbolized collaborative effort and commitment to sustainable agriculture. The joyous participation of students and parents alike underscored the community’s collective dedication to fostering a greener, more sustainable future. Furthermore, practical sessions facilitated experiential learning, with students actively engaged in nurturing coconut seeds in designated nurseries. The establishment of a seed nursery and plantation activities culminated in the planting of coconut seedlings on the school premises, symbolizing hope and renewal. To reinforce learning outcomes, “Coconut Cultivation Handbooks” were distributed to the school library, serving as invaluable resources for continued learning. Certificates and gifts were also presented to acknowledge active students, while school stationery was distributed to all attendees as a gesture of goodwill.

In conclusion, Moroththegama Junior School’s 25th environmental initiative stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and community engagement in fostering sustainability. Through education, awareness, and practical action, the school has embarked on a journey towards a greener, more resilient future, inspiring generations to come.
