Held in the heart of the Thambuththegama region, this program was initiated at the request of the Piyawara Social Care Foundation and the Nawasirigama GN Division, with support from the Community Police and Administrative Division.
Home to nearly 5,000 residents, this farming village faces challenges such as limited access to technical know-how, water scarcity, and outdated agricultural practices. Our goal was to introduce sustainable coconut cultivation while building community confidence through knowledge-sharing and hands-on training.
Following Nawasirigama’s success, the GHI team was invited by Mr. Upali (E.G.U. Rajapaksha) of the Rajanganaya Divisional Secretariat to conduct a similar awareness session. Set against the backdrop of a model farm, the program focused on strengthening existing farming efforts with modern, eco-friendly techniques. Participants included small-scale farmers, government officials, and members of the local village defense force.
